The Larkin Theatre at 816 Larkin Street opened in 1916 and joined the Clay in the 1940s as one of San Francisco’s leading international sites. By the 1950s and 1960s, long runs such as Never On Sunday (34 weeks) and Diabolique (24 weeks) were not uncommon, prompting the opening of the nearby Music Hall. The most popular film of this period was Room at the Top, which shared screens at both Clay and Larkin simultaneously for 21 weeks in 1959. Those who chose the Larkin got an added treat of being able to stop in at the candy store next door and treat themselves to the best homemade Belgian chocolates ever imagined. The theatre was renamed the Century in 1979, live adult entertainment is its mainstay today, and the candy store is long gone.
